AN AMBITIOUS UNDERTAKING

Plastique Polyfab Inc, specialists in the distribution as well as the manufacturing-to-order of products made with industrial plastics recently completed one of their most challenging projects ever.

Last October, the team at Plastique Polyfab Inc won a contract to manufacture two (2) submerged intake pre-filters, a huge undertaking that required over 2000 man-hours of labor over a six (6) week period.
In all, 12,500 kg of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) and more than 500 kg of HDPE soldering rods were needed to produce the two (2) units, each weighing over 7,200 kg.

These submerged units provide an initial filtration of sea water directly at the point of intake whereas the usual method consists of pumping the water to a filter at another site.

The moving of the two (2) units, over seven and a half (7½) meters in diameter by almost three and a half (3½) meters high required the temporary removal of a wall at the Polyfab factory. Transportation of the units then proceeded at night and a major highway had to be closed for the duration of the trip from the factory to the Port of Quebec.
At the port, everything was loaded onto a barge and then towed out to sea, 2 km offshore from the city of Rimouski. Finally, a team of underwater specialists successfully installed the pre-filters at a depth of 20 m.
